The word whisky somes from the Scots Gaelic uisge beatha, meaning "water of life". Whisky is produced from the most basic of Scottish ingredients - water and barley. Both landscape and climate are reflected in the whisky, which is why you can detect the distinct tastes of the sea, peat or smoke in some malts.

Of course a visit to Perthshire is not complete without visiting one of the distilleries. Just outside Pitlochry is the smallest distillery in Scotland, Edradour Distillery. All Edradour whisky is hand-made in the time-honoured methods. 

Other distilleries include Aberfeldy, Blair Athol, Glenturret, Tullibardine and Dalwhinnie.
